Over hundreds of years many Scots have left their native land. Most of those who emigrated left their hearts in Scotland …
From the lone sheiling of the misty island
Mountains divide us and the waste of seas
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides
These words were originally sung in Gaelic by fishermen on the St Lawrence River in Canada and were first published in 1829.
They describe vividly the longing felt by those who emigrated from Scotland and who could only revisit their former home in dreams.
Between 1835 and 1935 more than 2 million Scots emigrated to all parts of the world, taking their skills and culture with them. Many of their descendents have visited Scotland to search for their roots and to see the places where their ancestors lived and worked.
Ancestral Scotland can visit and photograph these places for
you to provide you with your personal picture of Scotland . |
