at Waterloo Hotel in August 1834 being offered the Freedom of the
City of Edinburgh |

and Dinner for the Edinburgh Pen and Pencil Club, one of
many societies who met regularly at the Waterloo Hotel |

1831- Alexander Smith was a 13-year old brass founder in the
Canongate. One weekend , his mother gave him a halfpenny to attend
a Fair. He was apprehended in the lobby of the Waterloo Hotel and
accused of stealing a silk handkerchief . At his trial in
Edinburgh High Court he was found guilty of theft and sentenced to
be transported to "the Colonies" (Australia)
